Go Green. Go White.

I applied to only one college. Michigan State University. This is because I wanted to go to a Big 10 school, their basketball team had just made it to the Final Four, and I knew they had a great advertising program.

As part of the College of Communication Arts and Sciences, I took courses covering
Account Management, Consumer Behavior, Integrated Campaigns, Media Writing, Advanced Creative Media, Creative Process, and Marketing.

Many faculty members have worked in the industry
such as Larry Steinberg (copy writer), Dave Regan (art director), and Henry Brimmer (graphic designer). Because of this, they were able to share their real-world experiences and better prepare us for our careers. The Chairperson of the Department of Advertising, Public Relations, and Retaling, Dr. Rick Cole has become a mentor to me over the years and was always there to lend his guidance to me.

As part of my capstone course, I created a fully integrated advertising and branding campaign for The Children's Trust Fund of Michigan.

Throughout the school year, I worked in Lounge 29, a student lounge in the Communication Arts & Sciences Building. I created the logo and promotional materials for the space. I also was responsible for increasing the social media presence of the College of Communication Arts & Sciences by posting updates about events within the college on Twitter, Facebook, and Linkedin.com.

Getting Involved

I was heavily involved with the Michigan State University Advertising Association (MSUAA) for three years. The MSUAA is an advertising club that provides students with valuable information about the industry by bringing them together with knowledgeable industry professionals.  Speakers from the ad industry come in every other week and show us what's currently going on in the business and what to expect when we start our careers.

As the Publications Director my senior year, I created the bi-weekly newsletter, and with the help of my committee, we put together an information guide for advertising students called "ADvice". The Department of Advertising, Public Relations, and Retailing liked it so much that they decided to keep this as a permanent resource for the college. It was even featured in the college's student showcase.

In the summer of 2007, I traveled abroad to Asia to study global advertising. I spent one week in Tokyo, Japan, one week in Seoul, South Korea, and two weeks in Beijing, China. It was a unique experience to be an outsider in a foreign country and learn all about their culture. We visited ad agencies in each country including Dentsu, Hakuhodu, and Ogilvy, where we learned all about mobile marketing and how consumers utilize different media.

I would camp out in the fall, so I could wait for hours in the cold, for the chance to jump up and down in the greatest basketball arena in the country: The Breslin Center.  Or as we call it, The Brez.

I also got to go to the Final Four in Detroit my senior year, fulfilling
a life goal of mine.
